It all starts with drawing. It is said that one can be a great draftsman, but a lousy painter. But that it is impossible to be a great painter of realism, and a lousy draftsman.

Drawing is the fundamental building block of art. Its importance cannot be stressed enough. Being able to accurately record proportions and values is and essential skill for artist of all levels, regardless of medium or subject matter.

This class will focus on imparting to students valuable tools and ways of approaching drawing in a more effective and efficient manner. This course is designed to help artists develop a strong foundation of knowledge upon which to build their future artistic skills to greater heights.

Students in this class will work on a number of small projects, each designed to improv an aspect of their artistic eye. As the course progresses, students are introduced to ever more challenging drawing concepts as they build upon what they have learned.

This class will begin with an investigation of linear drawing. We will discuss the different methods for finding accurate proportions, working initially from master works, and then from still life setups.

The class will then transition into a study of mass drawing and how to organize values to create a believable light effect and the illusion of form and space. Students will work from simple object as well as classical cast sculptures.

Towards the end of the workshop, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of portraiture and figure drawing while working from master works and photo reference.

-Various measuring techniques to create more proportional and accurate drawings.
